Church Service

It has already been mentioned, the commendable service rendered by the Puthenpurackal family members, along with other family members, in the construction and re-construction of Puthuppally church. The assistance rendered by these family members in the construction of the church at Ericadu Kozhimala under the auspices of C.M.S., 200 years ago, is included in the work report of C.M.S. at that time (This report is available in the C.M.S. college library).

Members of Kallarackal and Mannaparambil branches were at the forefront, in the establishment of Puthuppally Nilackal church. When Nilackal church was established on the 5th May 1891, among the 16 of its leading members, were the names of Kallarackal Pothan Iype and Mannaparambil Kurian Iype (Jr) as seen in the church records. Kallarackal Varghese Iype was the first elected trustee and Mooleparambil Varghese was the first Secretary. At that period, the church belonged to reformists. After four years of litigation, there was a court ruling that the church belonged to the Jacobite section. Despite the court verdict, many members who had taken part in building the church, with their money and effort, were sad to leave and so continued in the church. Only one family member each from Mannaparambil, Kuzhiyadithara & Kallarackal branches changed their parish to Puthuppally Horeb Marthoma church.

Kallarackal Iype Yohannan served as one of the organizers of the Horeb convention till his death. He gave free land to Ullayam Marthoma church and built the church building. He also gave free land to the Salvation Army to set up a church and a primary school there. Iype Yohannan also lead the construction of Ericadu Moria Marthoma church along with Valiyamannil Vadakkeparambil Philippose Pothan. The church land was bought in the name of Iype Yohannan.

Iype Yohannan’s brother Iype Varghese donated the land and building to Ullayam Jacobite church. He also gave free land to Ericadu St. Mary’s Jacobite church. His son Kallarackal Philippose Achan was the Vicar of these two churches. Kuzhiyadithara K.K.Kurian gave one and a half acres of free land to St. John’s Cathedral church. He was one of the main founders of the Malankara Reeth church at Pampady.

Mannaparampil M. Iype, as a member of the Managing committee and Working committee of the Malankara Orthodox church, rendered a commendable service. He led it for a long time, as the secretary of the Nilackal convention. His brother M.M. Mathew was a member of the Orthodox church Managing committee. He also served as the Chairman of the Andheri church construction committee. Chalumthalackal C G George played a pivotal role in the construction of Thottackad St. Mary’s Bethlehem Orthodox church.

Puthenpurackal family played a major role from time to time, not only in establishing churches but also in contributing priests and spiritual mentors, according to the Pakalamattam tradition. The details of Mannaparampil Philippose Kathanar, who was the Vicar of Puthuppally church, Kuzhiyadithara Valiyamannil Philippose Kathanar, who was the vicar of Puthuppally & Thottackad churches, Kuzhiyadithara Valiyamannil Philippose Yohannan Kathanar, who was the Vicar of Thottackad, Puthuppally & Vakathanam churches, Kallarackal Philippose Kathanar, who was the Vicar of Ericadu, Ullayam & Pariyaram churches, are explained in the genealogy of Mannaparambil, Kuzhiyadithara, Valiyamannil & Kallarackal sections. In the current generation, we have two priests. They are Pappalaparambil Rev. P. C. Mathew and Chalumthalackal Fr. Benny George Mathew. The Puthenpurackal family had priests, who rendered their services and land to the church, without expecting any profit from the church. In the present day, priests of the family also maintain this tradition. The God Almighty keeps on calling people for priesthood from the Puthenpurackal family, without breaking the chain.
